Diversity Statement

In today’s society respecting someone’s cultural and ethnic background should be given without reservation; it is not something that a person must earn. I have always believed that it is your reputation that you earn, and it is respect that is given no matter who the person may be.

In dealing with cultural disparity there are not just differences in learning styles or cultural beliefs but in rules of conversation; or how other ethnic groups approach friendship, or how they view of privacy or even in where our sources of truth originate. We should respect each others' origins, learn from them for their can be no interaction or positive communication without acknowledging and respecting those around you.

Cultural differences make life interesting, and give you a hint of the globalization in society which is not just happening now, but that will be needed for survival in the 21st century.  Traditions other than your own should be respected.  It does not mean that you must agree with their views only that you respect their views and treat them with the respect that is given as one human being to another.

My approach and beliefs regarding physical or mental challenges is not much different.  It does not mean that the person who has challenges need to be coddled or treated differently only given more assistance in accomplishing their goals. Being physically or mentally challenged is just another life issue that must be addressed and dealt with on life's terms. Those who are challenged are just as capable in the workforce, the classroom, and society as those who are not challenged.  They are entitled to the same rights of productivity, respect, and the pursuit of happiness in society.
